Moving calves into herd

I have recorded my calves birth and weaning through those screens to their dams. How do I now transfer them into the breeding herd? I referred to the 5/19/08 post by Kathy Cline But I can only access the calf record thru the birth or wean screen and my only option is to edit it not transfer it If I have the cow selected to view the calf record when I click on inventory it shows me only the cow and not her calves.

The refreshing/updating has been corrected and will be in the next update which will be available within the next couple of weeks. Your data is fine -- it just did not refresh properly.

Thanks!
Deb Hurraw

Re: Moving calves into herd

I was finally able to move some weaned calves into the herd by following the suggestions of your last post. I created a new group "1st calf hiefers" and thru the inventory tab I found the unassigned group and was able to assign a permanent id number. I then went thru the set up screen and assigned them to a location and the group "1st calf hiefers' I did ten hiefers this way but only a few of them are in the right group. The remainder are in the cow group. I have tried to transfer them thru the transfer screen. It goes thru all the steps but the hiefers still show up under "cow" instead of "1st calf hiefers. I now also have several cows that were formerly in the correct group but are now showing up in the "1st calf hiefers" When you look at those cows in the set up screen they are listed in the cow group but when i change to group "1st calf hiefers" those cows are listed there. All total I have about 10 hiefers and cows that are in the wrong groups and i can not change them. I selected some other cows and was able to successfully transfer them out of their group and back again. While I was working on this project I got some kind of error message and the screen froze and I was unable to unlock it. I finally shut off the computer and it came back up and everything else about the program was worked properly. Any ideas?

Re: Moving calves into herd

Lloyd,

You can identify part of the group by the follwoing:

1. In the Inventory Tab, choose the group that is unassigned.
2. A box will appear that will allow you to enter how many are to be defined. Enter the number of which you have not entered elsewhere.
3. Define these animals with their IDs and information. Click OK.

For the animals that have already been entered, you will not be able to re-use their IDs. They must be unique, otherwise there would not be a way to keep the data separate by animal. Since you have already identified these animals, the balance should be removed as these are just 'extra'.

When you are identifying a group of animals you can use the FILL button in the Identification window. This will allow you to enter a starting number and each animal ID will then be incremented by "1".

Hope this helps!
Deb Hurraw
Farm Works Software

Under litter number I was able to pull up a drop down box With the "lactation number" that I had assigned and as I highlighted a number it pulled up correct dam and sire. But as I attempted to give it an animal id, I constantly got a "Invalid ID number" message. Whether I tried to give same animal id as the litter number or a unique id, I got this same message. I was only trying to do one animal at a time to see if it would be accepted . Some of these unassigned groups have a large number of animals. It will be difficult to do the entire group at one time. I found some animals that I had already entered separately. If I tried to give them the same id that I already had in the system I got a "Not unique ID " message

Lets start by selecting the Query Menu. Make sure we have selected Show All, Show Both, Show Both and Show General. Then set the Location and Group Boxes to Show All. Do we see the Calf ID listed in the Animal ID drop down list? If so, select the Setup Tab. Review the Location and Group box to verify where they are located. You can use the Inventory Tab and then the Transfer button. It may be possible that we did not select the correct location during the weaning process and they got moved to the Unassigned location.

Let me know how you come out.
