Deleting Extra Roads & Waterways |
You may find that the USGS Quads CD gives you more data than you need. The following steps will help you to delete data from the USGS Quad maps, such as roads and waterways that are not on your farm. 1. Select the Layer Management button 2. Click and drag the Roads folder from the Available Layers to the Displayed Layers. The result is that all roads will be displayed. 3. Select the Done button and the layers will be displayed. If all maps are not visible, select the Zoom All 4. The Layers tab on the left will list the layers that are displayed. The top layer (known as the Active Layer) is the layer you will be working with. Use the Pointer Tool to click and drag to select any unwanted lines on the Active Layer that you would like to delete. Multiple areas may be selected by using the Ctrl key on your keyboard and clicking and dragging. Selected lines will have dotted lines and will be flashing. 5. Right-click and select Delete and the lines will be deleted. 7. Repeat step #6 for each of the layers that are displayed. 8. Repeat this entire process for Waterway, Railroad and Misc. Transportation. |
Combining Road & Waterway Layers |
You may find that you have many road and water layers. This can result in a large list of layers in Layer Management which can be confusing to sort through. The following steps will help you to consolidate USGS Quad map layers. TIP: You may want to delete any unwanted roads and waterways before proceeding. 1. Select the Layer Management button 2. Click and drag the Roads folder from the Available Layers to the Displayed Layers. The result is that all roads will be displayed. 3. Select the Done button and the layers will be displayed. If all maps are not visible, select the Zoom All 4. Right click on the top layer (known as the Active Layer) and choose properties. Change the layer name to Local Roads (or something similar). Click on OK. 5. The Layers tab on the left will list the layers that are displayed. The top layer (known as the Active Layer) is the layer you will be working with. Select the next layer that you wish to work with (in the Layers tab) and select the Top button 6. Use the Pointer Tool to click and drag to select all of the lines on the Active Layer that you want to copy. Selected lines will have dotted lines and will be flashing. 7. Right-click and select copy to layer. 8. Click on the Layers 9. Right click on the Layer that you just copied from and choose remove from display. 10. Repeat these steps on any additional roads layers you have displayed. 11. Repeat this entire process for Waterway, Railroad and Misc. Transportation |
