It sounds like the program thinks the square that you want removed is part of the field boundary; that is, with the boundary layer on top and you left click on the square, the square and the other three 40s become selected (with hash marks). If that is true the easiest way, perhaps, to remove the square from the field boundary is to use the split-line tool, left click and draw a line completely between the square and the other 40s, left click to stop splitting and then click "Finish." You should be able to right click on the square (it should be stripped gray) and choose delete. If correct, Save and Close. Evidently you have already imported that square as a boundary for a differently named field and so it should still be visible in your overall boundary map.
