Mitch,
I'm with you now (I may be slow but eventually I catch up)! My bet is that you have your attribute set to "Enterprises" and you've got a year selected. Since that field has no enterprise for the year, the boundary is transparent. Try clicking on "Field Boundaries" for the attribute at the bottom of the screen. The field should now have a gray color to it and you should be able to right-click and select "Add Label".

The program functions this way because the label will include the enterprise when you select it from the enterprise view (and in this case the field has no enterprise).
