Here are the basic steps for calibrating with Farm Site, it is best to have a paper copy of the ASCS map in front of you:

1. With your roads and waterways on the screen and your paper ASCS map in hand find three points on the roads and waterways that are also on the ASCS map. The points can be intersections of roads, or roads and waterways. The three points should be as close as you can get to being a right-triangle.

2. In Farm Site switch to your backdrop tools and click on the Registration Points Tool (the button with three red dots). The Registration Points box will appear.

3. Click on the first point on your roads and waterways that you located in Step 1. The coordinates of the point will be displayed in the Registration Points box.

4. Enter a name for the point. This name should be any name that will remind you of where the point is at (such as "450 W & 500 S"). Click the record button to save this.

5. Repeat this step for the other two points in Step 1.

6. Click on the Calibrate button.

7. In the Calibrate program, click on the Open button and select the ASCS map that you are working with.

8. The map will be displayed. Click on the Register Points button.

9. Click on the first point on the ASCS map. Select the name of the point from the drop-down list.

10. Repeat this step for the other two points. After recording the third point the map will be calibrated.

11. Select Save As and save the map under a new name.

12. Exit the Calibrate program and return to Farm Site.

13. Go to Layer Management and add a new layer for the ASCS map. The layer should be of the type "Only Lines".

14. Display this layer as the Active/Top layer.

15. Select the Load button on the Backdrop Tools toolbar and load the map that you just saved.

The map should be loaded next to the roads. Most ASCS maps calibrate very closely to the USGS roads and waterways. However the USGS maps and your ASCS maps are not perfect, therfore there may be some minor differences between the two.

Also, if you have the latest version of the programs, you should have gotten a tutorial CD. This CD has step-by-step instructions on how to do this along with screen-shots. You might want to take a look at this. Or call our support department at (219)488-3492 if you don't have this CD for some reason.

I hope this helps!
