There are two possible causes for your problems in defining a field:
1. Make sure that both fields are drawn entirely on your 97 crop plan layer. You can check this by removing all layers except that layer and then checking the lines that are there. Sometimes it's easy to have more than one layer up at a time and do some drawing on one layer and others on another layer.
2. The second possible cause is corruption in the lines that were drawn. To fix this delete the lines and objects for both fields and redraw them. Be sure when redrawing that the fields are completely enclosed, you can use the corner tool to go around the corners and make sure that there are no gaps left.

With regards to displaying the information on a layer, there currently is no way to display the data in a graph format, however if you right click on any area you can choose the option to Add Label. You will then be able to select what information you want to display for the area. This will allow you to display the information as text on your map.
