Tom,

I can see that getting USGS Dlg files is not an easy chore for the novice. Unfortuneately, since the system was set up by the Government there's not a whole lot we can do to change it. Two things that might help:

1. If you go to your Farm Site Helps you can print out a detailed explanation of how to download USGS maps. To do this select Farm Site Index from the Help menu which is right next to the working date in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Next click on the Search button and type in "Internet". Then choose the option "How to Get USGS Maps off the Internet". This will take you to a help topic that shows you step by step how to get maps. The area includes diagrams of what you will see and explanations of what those cryptic file names mean. This can be printed by clicking on the Print button, so that you can have a copy in front of you while you are downloading.

2. If you still have problems, we can get the files that you need for your area. The cost will be $50 (for all of the necessary quads of roads and waterways for your farm). You will need to let us know exactly where you are located (send or fax at (219)488-3737 us a state map with the area that your farm covers noted).

Don't give up on getting these maps since they can save you a great deal of time and help you to get an accurate map.
