Mitch, Can you explain what you're looking for? The Account Register presently defaults to the account that was previously selected (not the first account in the Chart of Accounts). It does this intentionally....that way if you're reconciling your bank account (for example) and you exit and go back you'll be in the same account.
Or are you suggesting that if you go to the Account Register and click on the "Payments & Purchases" button at the top that this would default to the same account that is in the Account Register? The work-around for this is to enter your check or deposit in the last line of the Account Register (that will default to the account).
