The overhead icon is a great way to pass on all those miscellaneous expenses that really don't have anything to do with a specific crop. To set up and use an overhead icon: 1. Set up an icon and use "Overhead" for the description. 2. Give the icon an action of "allocated" (you will probably have to add this to the list). 3. Give it a Charge Unit of "acres". 4. Make the icon a "Passive Enterprise" and don't worry about the Machine Properties. 5. Assign an icon to it (we like to use an airplane or helicopter since these icons truly work "over head").
Once you have the icon set up: 1. Farm all of your fields with it at the start of each year. Only farm the fields with the icon once a year (only at the start of the year). 2. Whenever you have an expense that doesn't relate to a particular field (such as general insurance or office expense or nuts & bolts), in the Other Expense area of Payments and Purchases select the appropriate expense account and then in the Allocate To area select Equipment and select "Overhead".
The result will be that all of these expenses will be spread between your fields (based on the acreage) and will show up on your enterprise statement on a single line called "Overhead". If you ever want to see what makes up these "Overhead" amounts, simply print an enterprise statement for the "Overhead" icon.
