Leslie, we are talking about Lidar data which is LIght Detection And Ranging. It is not truly GPS data as the elevation is determined via laser range finding while being geo-referenced via GPS. I downloaded my data from the Ohio Statewide Imagery Program (OSIP) website. They have the data available in several formats other than .las which takes less time to convert or extract what you want/need.

By the way HD, I am also trying another program called SAGA GIS to do some things but just downloaded it to mess with. I have heard good things about SAGA that is why I am trying it. I have played with most of the freeware programs out there for GIS data, GRASS, LizzardTech, LASTools, and LASUtility to name a few. I found QGIS very easy to learn. GRASS was powerful but hard to learn.
