So how do I break the link between a mother cow and its heifer calf that has remained within the herd as a replacement?

When we sell a calf crop the links have been severed between the mother cow and calf with the sale, and the revenues are allocated (attributed) to the mother cow.

If we keep some heifer calves as replacements and are returned back to the herd the second year after its birth, I am guessing that we are going to have to sell this heifer calf at some point in order to allocate (attribute) its value back to its mother, and then purchase it back for the same value for it to start its own enterprise.
I don't believe a weaning or transfer to another group will accomplish this break in the link of this cow enterprise.

Thanks for any insight,
