Data logging w/ Farm Site Mate

Search Discussion Boards
Rod,
Site Mate works utilizes “Layer Templates” and “Pick Lists” to stream line data entry in the field.

Layer Templates are like a layer in Farm Site. They can be set up in the office on a desktop machine and copied to the field computer or CE device. Essentially this is a template of the different data items to be logged in the field. Examples for Weed Scouting could be the type of weed, weed count, and notes. There is no limit to the number of attributes to be used in a Layer Template and there is no limit to the number of different Templates that you can create.

Pick Lists are like choices in Farm Site. This allows the user to set up a list of items to select from. Again, this can be done in the office and copied to the field computer or CE device. You are making a list of items to select from, so you don’t have to type in the field. Examples would be for weeds, setting up a Pick List with all the types of weeds that you’ll be scouting. There is no limit to the number of items to include in a Pick List. Currently it’s not possible to select more than one item from a Pick List (we’ve got this on our “To Do List”). However, the Pick List is stored in a text file and you can open this up in Note Pad and copy the pick list and paste it to the end of the file with a different name (maybe “Weed List#2”) so that you have two lists to select from.

Once the data has been saved and exported out of Site Mate, it is no longer “connected” to the Pick List. Thus you can delete or rename items in the Pick List without changing previously logged data.

With regards to limiting the items in the Pick List, there is no limit to the number of Pick Lists you can create. Thus you would want a separate list for each distinctly different type of data being logged (planting and spraying lists would be separate Pick Lists). If you only use a few of the items in the pick list with Site Mate, you will only see these items in Farm Site (Farm Site won’t get the whole pick list – only the items from the list that were used).

With regards to logging attributes in VRA, we are doing some work in the program in the near future and there’s a chance this feature may be available before Spring. If you e-mail me in a few weeks, I can probably tell you more.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
