Variable Rate Planting Map

I am working on setting up a variable rate map for the planter using last years dry yield harvest data and am having some issues I cant seem to figure out.

I have "Soybean #1" setup as a default of 130,000 pop/acre but when I use the contour view I created to make the application map and set it up as a "planting/seeding" task it sets the default to 30. I know I can change it manually later but I would like to know what I am doing wrong.

The reason is that the areas are the same for all the attributes. It's only an issue when you are creating a contour map from point data (either contouring yield data or grid soil sample points).

I do agree that being able to do a formula on a single attribute for a contour makes sense and I'll pass this on to the programmers.

Re: Variable Rate Planting Map

Scott,

Thanks for your explaination and insight.
I understand completly what you are saying about the independant attributes within point data and how their integrity is maintained within a gridded view. Complex formula's need to have this independant integrity of attributes. Grid soil sampling is a common practice in the corn and soybean areas of the country and a worthy practice.
However, zonal sampling is also a fairly common practice as well. Also I see alot of VRA work done based off (1) one attribute alone, be it yield, elevation, or nutrient level, etc.. If I create a contour map based on yield there is only one attribute in the info tab to account for, yield. Therefore a Simple formula should work I would think without having to change each individual legend item in the edit plan map to get the affect.

Hopefully I am thinking logically,
Thanks,

However, the challenge is that contours are dependent on the data attribute. So if you have soil test points that have pH, N, P, K, etc... (or for yield Dry Yield and Moisture). The contours for each data attribute will be different. Whereas when you create a gridded view, the grids are the same for all attributes (they essentially "drill down" through the data). The advantage to grids is that it allows you to have a formula that utilizes the data from any attribute on the layer. If you're using contours, that would not be possible (and formulas would be limited to a single attribute).

Originally the legend is setup based on the yield contour, with which you are changing it to an application map based on pop.
